I see that it uses HTTP gateway to access the network. I expect there will be a rather large traffic overhead since it would have to constantly poll the server for changes...

I'm not sure about that. I do MSN and ICQ from my IPAQ and from my PC (when I am in the lounge waiting for flights) using GPRS and I am always surprised at disconnection how little data I have used... even after 30 mins online
