is there any software available for the pc which will enable me to edit my contacts from the p800 and copy them back to the phone??

Right click the phone icon on your taskbar, select "sync station settings", tick the box for Contacts, select Outlook from the drop-down menu, click the 'Settings' box, choose a profile from the drop-down (Assuming there's only one choice), set the folder.
Then select the 'Standard Sync' tab and choose your options, same for the 'Full Sync' tab.
