Hi guys,
I am only a proud owner of a T610, so I don't read your forum much, but my father owns a P800, and is reluctant to upgrading the firmware because he thinks / read on forums that there is a strong risk of loss of datas.
Can anyone take 5 seconds to say if it is right or wrong, and give additional advice?

Thanks alot!

locally, when we upgrade the firmware, the Service Point backs up the data first, performs the upgrade, then restores the data.

no data lost.

That could be true but the service centre that I go to don't...you are personally responsible to backup the data and then restore it after the upgrade....the best thing to do is call up your nearest centre and ask them if they backup the data for you.

When I had my firmware updated, I did a back up of my phone on my PC. When the firmware was done, I restored my back up data onto the phone, so I didn't encounter no problems! My firmware was R1D and is now R2F.

Hope this helps!

Checky ric is right

common sense should prevail on this one if their is a risk of p800 data loss back it up.

Your dad is a dumb.

If you do a backup before upgrading saves all your data in your computer so you dont have to worry about data loss....
When the upgrade of the phone is complete just restore data with the PC suite...
If the contacts, Tasks, Calendar, e-mails and jotter notes are your only worries just synchronize the phone with outlook and all your stuff will be stored in outlook

@fcd- you might be thinking that when you restore the data, you restore the old firmware too? hehe, that's how i thought it worked when i first had my P800 upgraded.

As far as I know, there is no way to back-up your voice dialing recordings so they'll be lost and have to be recorded again.

The service centre in Italy don't do backup
you have to backup the data and then restore it after the upgrade.

But yesterday happened something of strange
I went to SE service for upgrade my "baby" to R2F

When i took i saw that upgrade was ok, but i found in the P800
my pic, my video, my contacts. They deleted only music amd mail file.
Is it normal this things? I was thinking that during uprgading all is lost!!!

@Vermania

Thanks you for your answer, and your comment on my dad, which is very useful... This is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for.

@all others

Thanks for the answers.
Still, I guess that my dad thinks that some datas cannot be backed up, or at least not easily, but I'm not sure of that. Any particular advice for backup?

He also mentionned having read on other forums that some datas or apps are in some way linked to the previous firmware, and may crash / fail when restored? any truth there?
