because all i can see the option to do is change the data alert tone

yea, tis possible
the fone already has 3 options (i think)

go to control panel/connections
then go to messaging accounts
then down the bottom go to alerts

too easy

And it you want the change the SMS tones for each contact, you can use a 3rd party app called SMS Tones.
