I have a p800 and my service provider here in Italy (TIM) gives me the choice to navigate using WAP or GPRS. I have set my phone up using the auto setup SMS's from sony for my provider and I can connect using either WAP or GPRS, so so far so good. My problem is with the GPRS service for which TIM charges two different tariffs. One is of 0,6 € cents for each KB for "internet" and an other of 4 € cents per KB for so called WAP using GPRS. I assumed this ment that if I visited a so called WAP site using GPRS I would pay the WAP rate but that for visiting normal internet sites I would pay the much lower Internet rate. Instead I seem to always be paying (the very expensive) higher rate even when visiting normal internet sites. What is it that I am not understanding here? Unless I can fix this I will simply use the normal non GPRS WAP connection which is maybe a bit slower but much cheaper.

you are probably using the "internet" apn to browse wap sites, hence you are charged for internet content. all you have to do is choose the data account with the "wap" apn.

No offense meant but it looks like, unless I am mistaken, that you are a little confused with GPRS and WAP.
Note that GPRS is a connection and NOT a system. GPRS is a method to connect to the internet, either through regular sites or WAP sites. Mobile phones normally connect to WAP sites while other PDA's, PCs or some mobile phones (here in the Philippines, we also have the SMART amazing phone), connect to regular internet sites.
GPRS is like a "broadband" connection while WAP connections is like a "dial-up" connection. This is why connecting via WAP is slower compared to connecting via GPRS. I believe that the reason why your GPRS connection seems to be slower is the idea that in you are accessing regular internet sites which is heavier in content compared to WAP sites.
You can use the GPRS facility of the service provider to connect to the internet. Instead of using your mobile phone to connect to a dial-up number to gain entry into the internet, you use GPRS instead. Whichever suits you will be your best bet because the rates of mobile service providers change fropm one to another.

Yes I realise that GPRS and GSM are connection methods but my service provider (TIM) lets me use either a WAP connection or a GPRS connection. When I use the WAP connection I am charged for the time I am on line regardless of which type of site I visit (WAP or Normal Internet). If I use the GPRS connection there are according to my contract two different tariffs. One is 0,6 cent € for each KB for "tariffa Internet". The other is 4 cent € for each KB for "tariffa WAP" In both cases we are talking about a GPRS connection but it seems that the charge per KB should be different when I am looking at different types of sites. If the sites is WAP only (I suppose) then I should pay the higher "tariffa WAP" while if I visit a non WAP site I expected to pay the lower fee. My problem is that I am always paying the higher fee. I assumed that I had the phone set up in some way incorrectly but maybe I need to talk to my provider.

Yes, you are correct. It does not make sense. If they say that there are different tariff rates for browsing WAP sites as opposed to regular internet sites, then you should be able to enjoy the differentiated rates.
Indeed, maybe you should clarify the matter with your service provider.

Erm.... just how would your telco know??? I mean... you can switch all the time... how would they be able to keep track of what type of sites you look at. Seems to different tariffs would make no sense!
BUT: my plans states the following: if I browse T mobiles T zones pages... I pay less than when I browse ANY OTHER page......
Hmmm... hafta check if this is actually true.... (I never touched T zones thus far) it seems a bit weird to me.
