Sorry if this topic has been handled before - I really did do a search, but I need someone to give me an "idiots guide to enabling infra-red to synch p800 to laptop".

I did switch on the infra red on my phone, and put it next to the infra red panel on my laptop... but it did not recognise the phone!

I have a Dell Latitude laptop... and I really am not in the slightest bit technical minded, so really do need an idiots guide please.

Thanks

Assuming that you have XP go to Configuration Panel -> Printers and peripherals -> and check if you have "wireless connection" or something like that or go to "system menu" and check if your IR is installed. If theres nothing, your IR is not installed then

I have Windows 2000 Profesional.

To ask a stupid question, but am I right in saying that for INFRARED there will not be a PORT attached?

I seem to remember my hubby having troubles with infra red. from what i remember (he also has a dell) he had to download the drivers from the net, and also ir was disabled in the bios. (which basically to you and me means go and and ask someone else to fix it).

That's correct, just go to the bios menu and select enable. If it still wont work, have the proper IR driver to be installed. By the way, be sure to check if still have free resources for the I/O devices. (especially for low type laptops like mine) Resources have to be configured manually. But i guess you have a high end laptop so I think the first two instructions will do.

Erm, where would I find the "bios menu"???

If its the menu where you select what form of connection you would like for the phone (the icon in the tool bar which activates itself when the phone is connected to the cradle etc), I already enabled the infrared but it still doesnt work!

And, where can I get the drivers (should I need them) for the infrared?

Thanks

BIOS menu is only available during 2-3 secons between the moment you turn your PC on and Windows starting to load. Usually, as soon as your turn your PC on, you will get a message on the screen. Something like "Press F1 to enter BIOS setup". On different computers it may be different key combinations that you have to press to enter BIOS. It's also possible that no such message shows, in which case you will have to check the manual (or internet site of the PC manufacturer)

On Sony Vaios, for example, there is no message but you press the F2 key when the Sony logo comes up immediately after start.
