is there a way that i can turn it off so that when i accidently press the joystick shortcut i wont get charged for it.

you could delete all the accounts not very practical but a way around it or just make sure you put the key lock on

The joystick up shortcut doesn't automatically connect. It loads the page from the cache. If you press joystick up, you will see that no GPRS icon is shown in the display. However, if you proceed to click on a link, the phone will connect, and the GPRS icon will show up.
