I decided to start a thread on here with a list of inevitable problems for my trip I started last week.

I normally live in the Worcestershire countryside in the UK but me and a mate have decided to take some time off and go travel this crazy planet. Trouble is, as we've already found out, putting your life into a bag and expecting all the techy stuff to work isnt always that easy in practise.

We've started in New York, Im currently in a hotel just off Time Square having been in Manhattan for just under a week. Basically, whether its me having some sort of roaming problem or T-mobile is crap for GPRS.

I know its pretty minor but service here seems to be up and down like a yoyo.

Anyone else had similar experiences in the last few days?

Its a crap opener for a topic but Im sure to have millions of other problems considerring our itinerary.

Another thing I wonderred was whether anyone here knew whether Im going to get any signal in the Cook Islands?!

I'll post some link to some comedy photos soon.

If anyone if here from NY you may see me at the memorial tomorrow.. If you see a guy with a hairy hat and a P800 you've found me....

New York GPRS -> Pile of w*nk (T Mobile)
Los Angeles GPRS -> Temporamental Pile of w*nk (T Mobile)
Rarotonga (Cook Islands) -> No GSM, let alone GPRS...
Gisborne (NE New Zealand) GPRS -> Absolutely perfect GPRS, a lot better than the UK.

Amasing.. you'd think the USA would be head and shoulders above the south pacific... far from it...

nope. GSM, GPRS in north america blows chunks compared to the rest of the world. 1900mhz is weak, more landmass to cover, urban areas littered with skyscrapers, more tower restrictions: NIMBY= Not In My Backyard, for one. certain places do not allow any towers/repeaters to be built/attached. i could kill for european GSM
