Howdy,

Having just ordered my 128MB MSDuo from Brando (they had some in!!!), I've strated to rip some of my CDs to OGG format for personal use.

I'm using dbPowerAmp, with a nominal bitrate of 192Kbps, 2 channels, at 44100kHz.

I transferred one 5 minute/6 MB .OGG file across to my 16MB MSDuo to check the file out in Oggplayer, and was a little disappointed. Every so often, it sounds like there's a little bit of static,like when you have the handsfree headphones in and you wiggle the plug/socket... (apart from that, the quality is very good, and my P800 will certainly give my Minidisc player a run for its money!)

Now, is this because I copied the file across to the phone, via the syncstation (I know, MUCH faster via a card reader) whilst I was doing a load of other stuff on my PC? Or is it a natural feature of OGG/OGGplayer and or dbPoweramp?

Steven.

spc

I use the default MP3 player and I have suffered similar interruptions in the music. I found this happens when the default P800 screen save is activated or when some other action is performed while listening to music. I'm not sure if this is similar to your experience.

Thanks guys -

@Arfi
I'm not sure of the benefit of 48kHz vs 44.1kHz for CD music... but I may give it a go.

@Jah
I was thinking that this was what was causing it - other programs/phone activity in the background.

Do you guys transfer files vi asyncstation or do you use a card reader?

Tranfer via the P800 link is too slow; I am lucky I have a Sony laptop with a MS reader built-in. Therefore, if transferring more than a few MP3s I will us the MS reader.

spc - have you compared the quality between MP3 and OGG? I tried both and did not feel OGG was better. I may have missed a trick as other say good things about OGG (e.g. smaller file size etc for same sample rate).

Via synch station the static effect is random or in the same possitions? if its random then it must be the programs,when i use oggplayer i dont do anything in the phone if i do somethimes i get the tsk tsk effect but not always maybe some programs stress the phone power more.

a 192kbit ogg is about the same as a 320kbit mp3, you could probably reduce the quality considerably and not notice any difference, personally, if you using them on your phone and and earphones... then you should easily be able to use 96kbit ogg and not notice a difference, maby even 64kbit (providing you rip the cd's yourself and not convert them for a mp3 as going from a lossy format to another lossy format will always give bad results)

are you using the latest version of Oggplay? In the first few versions, there was serious interference when you tried to do anything else with the phone (and I mean anything!). The latest version is 0.96 and the only thing that causes me any interference now is starting Opera.

Does the interference always happen at the same point in the file? I suppose that would indicate whether it's a problem with encoding. If so, it's worth noting the option in PowerAmp which allows you to set the priority of the program's process relative to everything else running on your PC. If you set that to Highest (or whatever the setting is!), you may find other programs interfere less with the processor resources. There are also two Ogg encoders available for PowerAmp, one optimised for P4 processors - it might be worth trying whichever one you are not using at present to see if that makes a difference.

Finally (coz this has turned into quite a long post!), I encode my Oggs at less than half the rate I would MP3s, just to echo the thoughts of others in this post. In fact, all my Oggs are mono @ 32kbps as I don't have the best ears in the world anyway!

Hope that helps in some small way...
