OK, so I've suffered through T68i, T610, T39m. All bluetooth, all with appalling reception. I've read reviews on some of the new Siemens, and they say the same thing. Even the P800, which should be able to fit a pretty big antenna in that large frame, only has average reception, easily beaten by the smallest Nokia candybars.
So the question is: is there a technical difficulty in building a phone with BOTH good reception and bluetooth? Or is it just incompetence?

It's been a while since I saw a triband nokia, so I wouldn't really know. But having said that, GSM1900 was a really dumb choice.

If you make an optimal 900/1800 Mhz antenna you can't get an optimal 1900 Mhz antenna, that's just the way it is. Stop comparing reception of triband and dualband phones. The T616 is made for the US.

Regarding the US carriers "choice" of GSM1900, wheras I agree that it is a dumb idea... I can't say that it was necessarily a choice! It was a part of the FCC's regulation guidlines, and as incomprhensible as it may be there isn't a graet deal that can be done about it!

However, maybe you guys are on to something here. I didn't think of it, but Nokia refused to make triband phones for the longest time (having problems with overheating, IIRC). So maybe the real problem is that there are no bluetooth single band 1900MHz phones.
Of course, this poses a new question: is it impossible to build a triband phone with good reception? Or is it just that Ericsson has never bothered optimizing the phone for 1900MHz?
Pezius, well, the only place I have truly awful reception is in my apartment. Unfortunately, I do want to make calls from there...
I know that the reception problem in the apartment is partly due to the 1900MHz frequency, and how the shorter wavelength can;t penetrate walls particularly well.
However, I also know that the three Ericssons I mentioned above (four, if you count T610and T616 as different phones) have abysmal reception, while two different nokias have adequate reception in the exact same location.
addendum to the FCC post: There is also the problem that the 950MHz band was used for the propietary formats of the various US cell phone companies. Now that we can't blame on the FCC, and I think that qualifies as monumental stupidity. If they all had switched to GSM early on, we would probably have much greater coverage in the US right now.

I might be wrong (though I doubt it) but there is no 950MHz band. I expect the reason that coverage with triband phones is so bad is down the frequency itself. As I said earlier - 1900 is just naff.
Go to mainland Europe and coverage is
rarely an issue.

There is no such thing as 950 mhz band, however there is 850 mhz band being implemented nowadays. When this is done everywhere, phones such as T616 will benefit from it.
I expect you won't see any difference between the T610 and the T616 when you're using the 1900 mhz anyway.
I doubt it has anytghing to do with bluetooth, however I have never had any problems with any

phones on 1900 mhz so far.

jonbob, I guess this bears repetition: It can't be just a quality of the 1900 band, or there wouldn't be ANY 1900MHz phones with decent reception. Since several Nokia phones get excellent reception where T39 stutters and T610, T616 and T68 completely fails, it MUST be the phone.
The only real question is whether these last phones are so poor because they are triband, or because they are bluetooth.
Does anyone know of any single band bluetooth phones?
