With my P800 (On Orange) it used to only come up as I "dialled up" an internet or wap connection - now after a reformat and reinstalling wap and messaging settings it is always on - is that the way it is by default?

Yes. You can change it by going to Control Panel -> Internet Accounts -> Preffered Mode = GSM Only.

GPRS will only connect when needed then.

Well with mine, its always on unless I have no GPRS attached!

Connected or not!

Best not to use the word dialed! I think its more of a connecting! - understand. The word dial is used for a dial up connection without GPRS.

Ditto P800_Zen_master: if your SIM has GPRS activated, I thought the blue triangle always showed...

No! it only shows when you have a reception! thats why its above your bars! the bottom part is for making calls with dial up and then top part is for GPRS. If both are blank then you cant do anything!

whats ditto??

My non-tech understanding is that the blue triangle shows that GPRS coverage is available and your your phone is monitoring the coverage. I have found that if I leave my phone in GPRS mode (control panel->Connections Tab-> Internet Accounts-> Other tab-> option called "preferred mode") my battery does not last as long as when I use set it to GSM mode (therefore it is not monitoring GRPS coverage).

when the blue bar is solid it means you are connected to GPRS and ready to make GPRS transmission. If you set the GPRS options to GSM only (not automatic or GPRS), that means the phone attaches and detaches from GPRS as needed (battery saver). When you're detached, you see a ramp of stairs instead of a full bar where the GPRS area should be.

It dissapears altogether if you're not allowed to get a GPRS connection at all (e.g., when roaming, or if you do not have a GPRS plan).

I found that GPRS usage requires 1 or two reception bars at least. Note that using the phone with one bar means there's a lot more power being used for transmission (i.e., short battery time)!
