it's easy, they're just animated .gif files-- but what software you have will make the difference for how to do it; i use adobe photoshop and imageready, but have also used a number of other pieces of software.
basically compose the still image(s) you want, and saved at the resolution you want. If you want fullscreen for your t610, the resolution you need is w128 x h160 such as this one:
by saving a series of subtly different images for movement, or some people make 'slideshow' type screensavers.
Next you need to compile the individual frames into a .gif animation. Coming from photoshop, imageready does this intuitively. If you don't have access to such software i suggest you try
download.com or
tucows for starters to find yourself an animated gif utility.
These programs allow you to set the delay for each frame, and whether a gif is looped infinitely, such as the one below. Also the program will allow you to save the gif in an optimised form, cutting down the file size by excluding extraneous info. Also the less individual shades/ colours you have the smaller the file size.
Don't expect miracles, as the t610 cannot run such graphics as fast and smooth as your pc but experiment, and let us know how you get on.

In my personal opinion the best software for this is Macromedia Flash 5.0
You can download a 30 day trial at
www.macromedia.com ,after that it over $200
Flash is great because it is designed for animation, e.g., you can make a ball in frame 1 and then in frame 10 move the ball to the other side of the screen. Then edit the settings of the first frame and flash will fill in the middle frames to make the ball go smoothly from one side of the screen to the other. It can also morph one shape into another.
You have seen lots of sites made of flash.. its just that except you publish the flash movie as a gif, instead of a .swf
It will take a while getting used to the software becuase it has a tonne of features, but becuase you are not making an interactive movie, but just a looping movie, it shouldn't be too hard.
Give me a short description or theme and I will make you a demo screensaver.

that's a good idea-- never even thought of using Flash for little gifs, but pleber is right-- the software is excellent. I may have have a go at this myself for gifs in the future.
