i dont know how it works in US/Canada ! Here in Asia, every company gives you a different SIM. As long as your SIM is not changing, you will have the same number...

It's different for different contries. For example, here in Norway, it's the person who owns the phonenumber, not the phone company, so we can keep the phone number when switching providers.
[EDIT]
You can get a different SIM and still keep the same phone number. The phone number has nothing to do with the SIM card.

This keeping your phone number when moving between carriers is called mobile number portability. UK have had it for a few years and Australia started it 2 years ago. Before that if you changed carrier you lost your number and had to get a new one.

USA will start allowing number portability in a few mmonths i believe. You have to request to keep your old number when you sign up for your new provider. You have to do this BEFORE your old number is taken out of servioce with your old provider.
The new provider may ask you for a fee. It may take up to 2 months
to get it all arranged (you get another number in between)
The number will always be property of the old provider, and the new provider will have to pay a fee for using this number on their network.
That's how it is my NL anyway.

2 months? wow. In Australia they do it same day or within 24 hours anyway and are legally obliged to do it with 3 days by the telcoms authority!
