If it has IRDA id reccomend getting an USB to IRDA adaptor instead of cable - its faster and easier.
The object is to be able to transfer for instance pictures and ringtones from your pc for free instead of buying them from websites via sms services. No reason in the world to pay 1-2$ for a simple gif picture or midifile - you can download everything for free or create them yourself and transfer them to the phone with the adaptor.
And to be able to synchronize calender with outlook if you have a phone with a calender.
An USB to IRDA adaptor is usually cheap - I paid about 25$ for mine.
