I need to ask my friend to update the MIME types for his server to support THMs - am I correct in thinking they are just TARs or some other crazy file?

It's a tar file, but you need the above MIME type to enable download from phone.

im havin problems downloading my theme. I uploaded em using angelfire and when i try and download it it doesnt work. I have it linked from my tagtag site and its downloads 99% of the way but at the end it said it doesnt support the file. The file is .thm too!!!! WTF!! anybody know whats wrong?

Yes, a MIME type "application/vnd.eri.thm .thm" has to be defined on the site, to enable downloads from the phone.
