My dad's trying to sync 3500 contacts and it's freezing up on him. I know this is way too many contacts....but this is his entire contact list for bussiness for the past 10 years. His palm m505 was able to sync this NO PROBLEM. I want to know if this is too many contacts.

I called SE customer service and apparantly the P800 can only handle 1000 contacts maximum. If this is true, then this device has lost a lot of respect in my books. My dad's palm was able to sync this with a lot less memory or CPU capability. Is there any way around this limitation (Firmware?) or is this an oversight by the designers?

Good Grief! I just sold my Palm thinking that the P800 was the solution for my problems! I have 900+ contacts after cleaning up my address book, this bug had better be fixed by the time I reach 1000 contacts!

I have about 1,900 contacts on my P800, no problem.

I just HATE the sync software as it always causes duplicates in my Outlook!

What you can try is the Nokia Data Suite, it does work, try it via bluetooth, as the usb cradle is very slow and what it could be doing is bottlenecking...

so try a connection media which is faster than usb...

To CLEAN UP a messy Contacts file due duplicated or triplicated entries, I converted Outlook to CSV and edited it in MS Excel. There you can see all entries and fields at once. You can sort them and remove duplicates. Beware +44 numbers lose the + unles you are clever with the formatting.

I think a lot of issues seen with M$ Outlook has to do with sync settings. I ran into similar issues with my P800 early last year. However, I've carefully reviewed the sync settings and the contacts listings preferences in Outlook. I have been able to rectify my issues since. I have also been able to reproduce some of the weird phenomenas (ie duplicates, freezing, etc.) by tweaking the settings a certain way. With that said, I don't the any of your issues has been a Pxxx bug. The sync features gives one several options to sync contacts. Thus, if you don't have everything setup correctly then you will have issues. If you take time to read the print in both M$ and the Pxx sync settings you'll be alright.

You can check out a tool that I have written that lets you select what contacts you want to synchronize. It doesn't allow you to sync all your 3500 contacts but at least it makes it a bit easier to select what contacts you want to sync to your p900.
It's called Contacts Synchronizer and you can try it out at http://www.tjitjing.com/sync
