I have alot of friends overseas, but one problem i face when they call me is that their name and phone number dont show. All it shows is UNKNOWN. Please does anyone know the answer for that problem.
Notice: I have their numbers saved on both SIM and the phone.

AFAIK very few international carriers are setup for receiving CLI details from internationally routed calls and also the more international legs for the call the less likely you will receive the details.

Masseur's explanation is pretty much the reason, there isn't really a 'better' explanation, as far as I know.

Actually I am busy looking for a web page with a better explanation but they are all very technical or over simplified as I have.
SMS is a different story as the senders number is incorporated in the message and is only transferred via mobile networks and servers whereas international mobile phone calls will often be routed via standard not mobile carriers and that is where the number is lost.
If I can find a better explanation I will post it here.

Carriers use "interconnect agreements" to manage trafic between them. IC's are the hariest part of setting up a telco - in fact they are the single most significant delaying factor in securing revenue streams (a new mobile operator can't even start to do business until they have an IC with the national fixed line operator). The commercial and service levels arrangements are the toughest bit, and technical specs are set aside until later. Thus, we see IC agreements with poor tech link-ups, and the commercial team moves onto the next IC agreement as this is so damn important for revenues. As the carrier evolves, they go back to fix up the technical side, and you start to see things like CLI, least cost routing, line clarity, optimal bandwidth usage, etc etc get fixed up. Truly tho, CLI is just about the last of their concerns. When you get "unknown", as masseur said, it is because just one (or more) of the carriers had not perfectly set up the technical link to the carrier they handed over to. The guilty operator may even have every other IC link 100% - and is just dropping th eball on this lesser important one. It's a chain; any link can break, and the more links the more chance of breakage. You probably recall when mobile started in your country, and for the first 6 months CLI did not work except cell to cell. After 6 months land lines started to appear on your CLI and you thought that was just kewl. Now make one carrier English and the other French...you get the idea.

as someone said. ur number is incorporated within an sms. with a call, it is routed via many different international landline providers and there switches (routing systems) do not pass on caller ID's. no solution to this im afraid, just something u ave2 live wit!!!
