Hi. I am trying to connect my P800 to my remote SonicWall firewall over the internet. I am on Vodafone and can connect to the internet (not WAP) no drama. Supposing my Firewall has a IP of 162.162.162.2. I open a PC internet session and can connect no problems remotely using https://162.162.162.2. If I do this from the P800 I just get "could not connect to host". I have also treid to connect to a remote PC via VNC which again did not work. Obviously I am doing something wrong but I'll be ...*.. if I know what it is
Cheers

You are using your PCs public IP address, right?

The reason I am asking is because dedicated firewalls usually have 2 (or more) IP addresses. One public, and one private. You'd use the private IP address to access the FW from inside, and public - from outside (internet)

Thanx for your prompt reply.
Yeh I am using the public address and can access the FW using a dial up connection to the internet offsite.
Strangely enough if I type in http://162.162.162.6 into the P800 Opera browser I get "Connection to host refused". However if I type "https://162.162.162.6" I get the bit counter rising - 1kb,2kb,3kb then blank page. It would seem that it is getting there but not displaying. I also have HTTPS management rules set up in the FW to allow remote connections !!

Thanx again

The "Connection refused" message is pretty clear, the FW is set up to reject unsecure connections. What you should do is try to find out which Secure connection methods the FW is set-up to accept, and doublecheck that P800/Opera support that. Pay particular attention to key length...

Hmmmm..
The refused connection error is correct. My FW only accepts secure connections which I have created a rule for in the FW. HTTPS management means that I can access the FW admin page from anywhere on WAN or specific IP address.. I cant help feelin its the P800 thats the problem, but I have now tried it with a static IP & Auto IP, with neither having any effect. I have looked everywhere for a solution to this, and to be fair I dont even know if it ever will work !!

Have you given access to your P800's IP address? It suppose it's a dynamic IP, isn't it?

Sorry, I dont understand that last one...
Just to clarify:
The log in goes like this https://162.162.162.6 - then log into admin panel on FW
I can log in to my FW from a IE6 browser session from PC.
I cannot log in using P800 + Opera.

Sorry if I am sounding a bit thick but I am clueless..

What I am saying is that perhaps you are only given access to administer the FW from your PC - locally. Most firewalls will block all remote administration by default, and you have to create rules to allow it for specific IP addresses.

Right...got you now.
Yes I have set up a rule that will enable me to access the FW from anywhere on the internet. I have gone to a PC at home and logged into it using the https://*******
On SonicWall it is called HTTPS management & it means that I can access the FW admin page from anywhere on WAN or specific IP address..
Still no joy though !

In that case I guess P800/Opera does not support the type secure connection requiered by the firewall...
