Hi,
Wasn't sure what forum to post this in.
I'm moving to Germany next week for at least 6 months, perhaps longer. I want to get to get a pay later SIM when I arrive, I have my own phone, can any one who has experience help me out??
I looked at operator sites but only got confused especially as my German is not the best. I want a tariff that will allow international calls & SMS, international roaming and GPRS. I would only be using it to make a small number of calls in the evenings and at the weekends as I will have a landline available during the day at work and in my apt in the evenings, its main use would be for SMS and GPRS. Most of the SMS would be to Ireland and England as would the small number of calls I make.
Also how would I top up the account?
Any recomedations would be greatly appreciated.

You need a full residence card, which takes quite some time to get done, in order to be able to get a pay monthly account so the only option initially is prepaid. You just need to show some ID and have an address, even a hotel which I had to start with will do.
I am using Loop which has been taken over by O2 but every time I check out the prepaid card rates I find they are pretty much the same price give or take a few euro cents.
The one I have allows international calls but they ain't cheap, and it also allows GPRS so it suits my needs very well when I am here.
You buy top up cards at most petrol stations and the phone shops in town and also there are loads of those cheap internation call centres and internet cafe's that also sell them so even on a Sunday when most of Germany seems closed you can pretty much still get the top up cards.
btw, you can use
Altavista babelfish for web page translations.

I am not sure about tariffs anymore cuz its been a year since i've been to G but the best service I got was with D2 and E Plus.The later operates on 1800mhz and u mìght have a prob with that as they dont have the best coverage.Just keep all these in mind when looking up at tariffs.Just my 2Ç;-)

Oooh I forgot about crappy E-plus... my second phone with either my UK Voda or Aus Telstra sim card occassionally get switched to E plus when roaming and they are crap in my experience. Numbers that are in my recent call list won't work on E-plus and I have even less success on international calls. I immediately do a manual switch to another carrier!
Avoid E-plus.
D2 are vodafone germany btw...

U r right about Eplus,the coverage sucks sometimes as i said but if u work/live in a good spot of coverage they have decent prices.

Masseur, I'm looking at changing from T68i to T610, I was going to do this a while back but the bugs in the initial releases put me off. It sounds ok now so I'll prob change when I'm in Frankfurt. I got my T68i in the Nokia shop in the Zeil, the price was good at the time. Is there any other shop that you know of that might have better value?

There used to be a great shop just across ther road from Kaufhof (near Nokia) but they closed down a couple of months back.
The other shops om Zeil all seem to sell branded phones like T-mobile and vodafone etc.
A warning.. don't buy at the airport. I fly through Terminal 2 every week and the duty free shop there is very expensive. They are still selling T610s for 549 euros! and accessory prices are ludicrous! I go in there sometimes just to have a laugh!
Bad Homburg eh? I call that place Bah Humbug
You should come into town in December as the Christmas markets are pretty good and the Glüe Wein even better!

Yeah, Bad Homburg is so dead ... nothing happens there, once 10 pm comes along everyone is in bed or so it appears !!
Glüe Wein, I remember climbing up to the castle in Heidelberg and back down again at Christmas a few years back, the Glüe Wein was never so welcomed after it!!
