I've never had this problem before, until 2 days ago...and I still haven't found a solution.
Whenever I recieve an SMS, the sender shows up as it's number, not it's name, despite the fact that the number is in my Contacts/Phonebook. I tried doing Options -> "Call Sender" to see if it was a problem with the actual contacts, but when the number was dialed and called, it's Contacts/Phonebook name appeared.
Also, today, I recieved one SMS which actually ended up appearing with the Contacts/Phonebook name I assigned to it instead of the actual number. I replied to that SMS, and when the same person sent me yet another message, the message display screen's "From:" field still only displayed the number.
It is quite annoying and I have tried doing a backup/re-restore combo which was suggested on some other site but it had no effect. Anyone else encountered this problem or know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance!

I have only been here a few days but i am pretty sure i am confident enough to help people properly.
I think you need a firmware pack. The link stock them it's free if you have 12 months.

Oh and, if it's any help with helping resolve this annoying 'bug', when a new message is added to the "Outbox" or "Sent" folders, it does appear with the correct "To:"/"From:"/whatever field and appears correctly in the folder's message list.
Also, I did not do anything 'strange' with the phone, and don't even have any third-party programs installed (except for Opera) even though I don't think that's the problem. When this problem first 'happened' I was in between an SMS conversation.
And yes, before somebody asks, I have tried simply restarting the phone. Won't help

Hmm... i don't know if it's related, but i'll post it anyways... just in case:
I'm from Denmark and i have a friend in Canada. When i SMS him, he always gets my message. But when he writes to me i never get them. He uses AT&T rogers... I just realized the equality there... hehe...
I don't know if it's just a crappy carrier or it has something to do with that bug there... hmm...

I also had this problem with the number diplaying instead of the name, it only happened when my contact had several numbers. What I did was I set the mobile number as the default number for the contact. The error has not happened again.

This happens with of too. When number is not in international format; i mean +<country code><cellphone number> i have contacts stored in this format. But in incoming SMS from local number, senders number appears in local format (without country code)
This message was posted from a T68i

When my T68i was upgraded to R7A (now I have R8A) and after that I switched on my phone, I quickly receieved SMS from friend, but there was only number in display.
But when the phone was on standby some more minutes and this friend sent to me another SMS, then the phone showed her name on display. When I started to read SMS from SMS-menu, there was name.
Maybe (after switching on) the SMS was recieved so quickly, that phone did not have enough time to control the SMS-sender name from phonebook?

not related. certain carriers will not allow sending SMS to certain other foreign carriers or certain countries.
I cannot receive sms from singapore for example, but I can send worldwide.
Eeven tho I can send ok, ppl on AT&T USA will not receive my message, nor can they send to me.
It's provider-related... unfortunately

Since getting R2F, my P800 also gets confused when getting an sms from a contact who has 3 different number entries in my phone book.
It only happens on that contactt & it only happens ocaisionaly, i can live with this tiny problem.
