> What is the T610 Desktop for?

Hi!
I've looked through the manual, and searched the forums and net, but I still cant work out what the little square in the bottom middle of the screen represents! It's split into 4 smaller squares, and the top left is always highlighted. The manual refers to it as the Desktop, but i cant see its point - or it ever changing!
Just curious as to what its actually for!

It means that you can reach the desktop by pressing the respective button/softkey. The desktop is represented by the set of twelve icons.

I also wondered the same thing about the thing at the bottom and I'm not sure I understand the responses here. If i press right on joystick -> menu. If i press in the joystick > menu.
I tstill doesn't mean anything to me?!
