According to
www.pdabuzz.com Palm is trying to persuade Sony Ericsson to abandon Symbian for Palm, for its Smartphones. Palm is saying that Symbian is domonated by Nokia. What do you think? SE using Palm rather than Symbian? My view is that Symbian was designed for cell phones and is a much more advanced OS that Palm (e.g. has multi-tasking). I think it would be a technological backward step for SE to move to Palm.

I agree with Palm, becouse Nokia domonate Symbian.
I hope that SE listen to Sony and convince that Palm is better.

On the plus side:
Its convenient since they already have a relationship with the Clie line-up, they have strong in-house knowledge of the platform.
Symbian was not designed for mobile phones, but also for PDAs (Right? Not 100% sure on this one) Psion used it...
As far as I understand, Symbian is a complicated platform to develop for, so going the PalmOS way could help get a lot more application out. ( I am not a developer, but friends who are and worked on projects with the P800 mentioned this to me)
Strategically could be a good move, by leaving Nokia basically alone with this platform, making it more complicated to evolve.
On the negative side:
PalmOS has had tons of problems when they went wireless with the Palm VII, I assume this would have been worked out, but I know it is no longer as stable as it was up to the Palm V.

Psion designed EPOC, which Symbian is based on, for mobile phones very early on in EPOCs development. As I said it was designed for Smartphones unlike Palm OS.
Also, have you ever tried to stire applications on a memory card using a Palm, its very hit and miss. Palm OS was not designed for memory card management, again unlike EPOC and Symbian.

well, that's not surpising. according to palm source, the next version of their operation system (Palm OS 6, codename: Sahara.) would be geared towards high-end devices and advance mobiles . It is reported that multi-tasking and graphics-handling abilities have been improved.

Poor applications? I've met a lot of people putting off getting a P800 because of the dearth of applications on that platform - it's miniscule compared to the what's available for the POS - of course, that should not be surprising since they've been around for quite a while already.

there are tons of games and apps for symbian 6 but the main flaw of symbian 7uiq is the few software available.
symbian 7: best os for touchscreen devices but few software
palm: all the software you'll ever need and more, but unpleasant interface
so you decide. or sony ericsson decides for us
edit: if i see palm 6 is as fast and pleasant to use as symbian 7 i'd support the decision of sony ericsson of switching to palm.

In my opinion, it is a good news.
Yes, Symbian is dominated by Nokia. Also, Nokia is the biggest shareholder of Symbian. On the other hand, there are so few softwares supporting UIQ.
P800 and P900 are both so powerful for a mobile phone, however they have quite so few quality softwares. Even Symbian 6 I cannot see so much quality games and softwares except those for N-Gage.
One of my friends has just bought a Palm OS phone and told me that: "Palm OS has so much softwares while Symbian has so few..."
Also, you can find that there are so many people wanting to get a Treo 600.
By the way, it is wonderful if Sony Ericsson uses Symbian 7 + UIQ in some products like P900, and uses Palm OS in some products (maybe P200? haha). Like Samsung and Motorola, Sony Ericsson can bring different OS to its smartphones to order to give consumers more choices or say "attraction".

@djk
are you implying that the palmOS is only good for lowend phones by saying "maybe P200? haha". yeah, i know it's a joke but isn't it interesting that the treo 600 is more expensive than the P800?
If POS6 turns out to be as good as PalmSource touts it to be, maybe other manufacturers running OS other palm would really consider using it. (If SE decides to do the switch, they may create a new smartphone class or retire their current symbian-based line of smartphones.) Anyway, Sony is already a current POS licensee, maybe they would create that line of smartphones and SE retains the symbian line.

Anyway ....
I've already decided I'm done with PDAs or smartphones (there are just too many sacrifices i just can't make). I just got myself the iPaq 5550 and I hate myself for getting it. (my first PPC actually, having been a palmOS user all this time since IIIc)

.
Recently, I've discoved what's gonna be next on my list: a
12" Powerbook from Apple.
mobile computing Nirvana? I don't think so, but maybe something close to it.

@djk, i believe no sony ericsson product uses palm os. p200 will most probably use symbian 7uiq or even symbian 6 (which would suck A LOT!

).
sony, on the other hand, does use palm os in their clie's, and even make a great effort to enhance/personalize the system. i'm sure that in the beginnings sony ericsson thought seriously about using palm os in their smartphones, considering sony's familiarity with it. however one of the winning features of symbian os's is the good implementation/integration in phone enabled devices (er... phones). in fact, afaik all symbian devices are phones (i mean, there are no symbian pda's). this integration is not only very good in symbian, but also we have to remember that phone integration of microsoft pocket pc phones and palm devices are far from ideal. those os's don't go much further than having a "phone" application with an on-screen keypad and the obvious ability to call directly from the contacts application. sms in phone edition pocket pcs and palms are very unpleasant. not to mention mms. most of the cases, you simply CAN'T do sms or mmsing.
multiplatform philosphy? hmm ok, as long as you have the money for licensing all the os's, it's always a good idea since customers will not only have a selection of os's but a broader selection of devices. but well... perhaps sony ericsson... you know... doesn't have that money
may be in a future.
