> Question: T616, AT&T and the TDMA network

I am a bit new to all the different network acronyms so please bear with me for just a bit. I am in the U.S. and am looking for a new cell provider. I spend most of my time in either Atlanta, Ga. or Sarasota Fl. I was considering AT&T's National Plans which has extensive GSM coverage in Atlanta but currently only has TDMA coverage in this area of Fl. I talked to their customer service and they mentioned that they have two phones, the SE T616 and Siemens S46 that would supposedly allow me to use both networks and as a result not incur roaming charges while on AT&T's TDMA network in Sarasota. This is going by what they told me. Has anyone tried this or have had a similar situation? Not sure how this is possible as I thought the T616 was a GSM only phone. Thanks for your help.

As far as I know the T616 is GSM-only so I think the rep is just trying to sell you a T616. The S46 is the only GSM phone in the US I know of that can access both TDMA and GSM networks. AT&T's National plan doesn't discriminate between TDMA and GSM access anymore. If you sign up for the National plan you can use either a TDMA phone or GSM phone or a phone that can use both networks like the S46. This means no roaming charges if you've got an S46 an have to use the TDMA network when you're in Sarasota.

Possibly was the second phone a Ericsson T62U? If so it is indeed a GAIT phone which is capable of both GSM and TDMA coverage.

yes maybe there was a misunderstanding...the rep may have said t62u...the t616 will not work on tdma...so i suggest u get a multiband national plan, that way, u will have service virtually anywhere u wish

The nokia 6340i (I think thats it) has GSM and TDMA bands. I know cingular sells that one.

the 6340i a much better phone than that S46, from what i hear the S46 is junk i dont know about the SE T62u. Also with GSM/TDMA switching you will drop calls the system can't transfer the call without dropping it. Also the phones get confused about which systems to use and sometimes just sit there with No service for a min or 2 even though you should have a full signal for either gsm or tdma.

Check tmobile they have the best gsm coverage here in the northeast. There are only like 3 or 4 gait sets available and none are very interesting... All US carriers are switching to GSM or wcdma so buying tdma device would be silly
