ok in china there is a 3G network and it sells good and it works.
but what about here in europe?? will the operators have enough money and will they make enough money to keep up 3G? UMTS ok fast surfing but it will cost us a fortune! handsets are beeing prepared. motorola nokia siemens and samsung will have 3G handsets ready at teh end of this year. but how many operators have 3G yet? there are still to many problems whit 2.5G. look at GPRS not every country has it yet. and in some country's the price for GPRS is way to expencive.
and what about the handsets? how much will they cost?they have everything colour schreen big memory camera and much more. that all must cost. a T68 cost much but it will be like 4 T68 so i will cost 4times as much in the begining. en look at all the softwear updates, the bugs and the delay's of new softwear today! what will it be then?
what do you think? is it time for 3G or do we wait another year?

I wouldn't think they'd make it too expensive or it'll never take off, and if they want it to be the next big thing that's just be counter productive. They're (not sure which network) doing a trial at the moment in the Isle of Man with a 3g network, ca't find much info about it just that it's a full 3g service, could be a good place for a visit to see if you can pick up a 3g handset, probably have to be a resident though.

GPRS is 2.5g not 3g. They must have some nice handsets in the Isle of Man at the moment, they can't be cheap.

If you want to see a "live" 3G (UMTS) network, check out the link below:

http://foma.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/

This foma network from NTT DoCoMo is almost the same as we will have in Europe (almost). It almost uses the same standard for UMTS.

In Europe it is expected to have UMTS by the end of the year in some countries, but there will be delays from the phone and network side. The only networks working in Europe today are test beds. Remember how long it took for GPRS to get to a stable platform.

As for cost, it will depend on what the user wants, a low end phone might run about $300 to $500, qa high end phone, almost like a PDA with cameria, mp3 etc might run about $900 to $1000.... almost the same price as the P800.

ok i am 17 it took a lot for me to get to 600$ so i could buy the T68m but i want only the best sow how on earth i am goining to get to 1000$.
in japan people love new technologie but in europe only there are only earlyadoptors. japan is far more a head then europe in mobile stuff and ages a head of america.
if a mobile could cost up to 1000$ how much will it cost to use UMTS?
an MMS will cost around 1$! that is more then we expected. a normal SMS cost's around 0.10$ so that's 10 SMS for 1 MMS isnt that expencieve???

Yup, I agree but....... in the sense the low end phones in UMTS will run about $300 to $500. The T68 is in the low end catagory for UMTS.

A low end phone will have MMS, bit rates up to 384kbps, to have a built in camera will run about $600 to $700 for the mid range phones.

So to be honest the cost are about the same between UMTS and GSM when it comes to functionality.

The network in question running PROPER 3G is Manx Telecom on the Isle of Man

Its part of the mm02 group (BT Cellnet etc).

Following link worth reading:

The price on 3G all depends on how many users it will have. In the start it will probably be very expensive, but when people starts using it in big kvanta, like GSM phones, the price will go down. It doesen't cost more to produce a 3G phone than a GSM phone, it's the development that is expensive! So if we all get us an 3G phone, the price will be nice!

i think about 80% of the of the people wont use UMTS. they think surfing whit there phone @ 2MB/sec is usseless for them. they will be glad whit the video phone thing but everybody needs to have a video phone then. a lot of people her in my country have still got a 4year old phone the stupid nokia 5110 they still use it, it is so old. they only think a phone is for calling or for SMS but it's easy to understand them, they have never tryed a good phone! give them a T68 or T39 they would say hey you can get the news info from internet, you can add lovely pictures whit SMS wow a phone and a voice recorder whit a calander! they just dont know what they are missing
