Hmm weird. Maybe it has something to do with the tariff you're on?

Mobile phone company Orange yesterday unveiled a suite of personalised services and a range of new handsets that it hopes will help it match the recent success of rival Vodafone's Live product.

Orange World allows customers to access a range of services personalised to their tastes through a single icon on their phone. Other operators have already launched similar so-called mobile phone portals - Vodafone Live and Active from O2 - but Orange claims its portal will have a greater degree of personalisation.

"Yesterday we had the tech speak, today we have one-touch to Orange world," said Orange's head of marketing Richard Brennan.

Although many of the services in Orange World will be available on existing handsets in the UK and France from next week, Orange is also launching a new batch of what it terms Signature phones to complement its existing Microsoft Windows-powered SPV smartphone.

By the end of the year Orange will have eight such smartphones in the shops, including one from Nokia, all sporting the Orange brand and the Orange World icon.

By the end of next year Orange, which is currently being bought out by parent France Telecom, hopes 15% of new customers will be using one of these Signature phones.

Orange hopes customers will spend more time calling, texting and downloading information on these phones. Already it has persuaded more than 500,000 UK customers with handsets that can use WAP to use Orange World's predecessor, Your Page, and personalise their information services. Those customers spend an average of three to four times more of their day browsing news and information than normal Orange customers.

The Signature phones, with their Orange branding, are also a direct challenge to Vodafone, which yesterday confirmed that its Vodafone Live service has attracted 3m customers across Europe in just a year.

Vodafone reckons a customer with a Vodafone Live phone spends up to 10% more than a customer with a traditional handset.

The launch of Orange World came as Orange unveiled an 8% increase in revenues for the third quarter to €4.7bn (£3.2bn). It added 1.33m subscribers during the three months, taking its total base to 46.9m.

Orange's parent France Telecom reported third quarter operating income before financial charges of €4.7bn, up 9% on the previous year and ahead of analysts' expectations.
