i'm currently using a pocket pc ... and it has 32Mb ROM and 64Mb RAM.
exactly how does this compare to the 16Mb RAM on the p900. are all of those 16Mb available for installing software etc.?

i mean, will i need to install programs onto the memory stick which does not sound like a good idea (speed/availability)?

thanks,
daniel

I use a P800 and the majority of my apps are stored on the Duo - no real performance problems that I have noticed. I did have some on the internal memory and then re-installed on the Duo.

64MB on a PPC = about 16MB on a Symbian or Palm device.

Yes, you can use all 16MB for apps and other things... yes you can install apps on the MS Duo... speed is not compromised since on-board RAM has the same access speed as the MS Duo.

whoa, you guys are quick

thanks for the info.

but, just how can 64Mb ppc equal to 16Mb p900?
are programs smaller? do they require less space to run?

my issues are with desktops coming with 512Mb ram, pdas starting to have 128Mb ram, and palm and symbian keep on murking about with minute amounts of this precious memory.
isn't it a little short-sighted?

what if i want to install a route planning program, which takes (germany, austria and the alps for example) about 200Mb on a pocketpc, how will i ever get something like that onto the little p900?

If you want the capacity of a PDA, don't buy a Smartphone but a PDA...

Symbian/PPC is like Apple/Windows.... the first need half the memory and Processor-speed to do the same work as the second... the first is just well born all in one system, the second is just a patchwork of application working the best they can... (btw, i have a PC )

The GPS system for P8/900 works mostly in real time with a central information bank, who they connect (GPRS) to to get the roads-inforamtion they need.. no need to use memory for that. Look at www.wayfinder.com

Well, not all RAM is equal... example... a PPC running 64 or 128MB RAM runs really well... try running 64MB RAM on a WinXP or Win98 machine... Turtle Power!

Symbian and Palm OS machines are very efficient when it comes to using RAM. And their apps are very small to begin with. The largest app I've seen for my P800 are actually games... MIB2 and Doom1 (the WAD files are killer.. eating up as much as 4MB) And of course my Encyclopaedia set for my Mobipocket Reader. (yup... full set..80MB)

Now, with regards to your street planner... any SW dev who would make a planner for the P800 would be an absolute idiot if they made the maps too big to fit onto the target device. If the map is an image map... its very easy to compress it to either a 4-color GIF file or a proprietary vector file.

PPC on the other hand (as with all MS products) are memory hungry... they aren't coded for efficiency and are written with the assumption that the end-user will conform to their hardware specs... instead of conforming to the existing machines... thus a 64MB PPC runs about as well as a 16MB Palm or Symbian device.

hope my provider will make it available soon.

thanks guys.

ahem - I kinda disagree on some of above statements.

Ill start by pointing out that I have both the P800 and an Ipaq 2210 - therefore I actually know from real life what Im talking about.
I love them both, and Im not trying to dizz the P800/900 or anything so spare me the flaming fanatics - but I just hate it when people start recommending something based on their personal feelings rather than on facts.

Therefore - heres some unbiased real life info:

yes the symbian OS need less computingpower then the pocketpc but since the hardware of the Ipaq are 4-5 times as fast as the P800 - the Ipaq is more than twice as fast as the P800 in real life.
No 16 mb memory is far from enough - its ok if you just run the basic but if you want to do more than that, video, mp3playing, games, apps, you WILL need more memory, dont beleive anyone telling you otherwise, and since the P800/900 only supports the most expensive, hardest to come by memorysticks of all times, youre gonna be a litlle annoyed with that compared to my ipaq's memoryslots using cheaper bigger sized memorytypes.

The main difference imho is that the P800/900 and the Ipaq are different kinds of devices. The P800/900 are nice combined units with phones and pda. Then you wont need to carry both a phone and a pda and have to have 2 sets of contactlists to maintain. And they are without doubt the nicest pda/phones on the market.

But from a pda viewpoint the Ipaq beats the P800/900 hands down anyday. Theres no question about that !! and I find myself using my Ipaq and my T610 alot more than my P800 these days.

Well, the P900 comes with a MS Duo on 32 mb. It's not enough if you want to use the P900 as a music player anyway so. I think you'll find yourself bying a new MS Duo and then storing most of the apps on the old one (at least I did with my P800). But 16 mb i enough, the P800 only had 12 and I'm most happy with that.
