The speakerphone function on the P900 works much better than on the P800.
However, it only seems to operate with the flip open. Is there a way to enable the speakerphone with the flip closed?

Not that I know of... the Speakerphone can only be activated 2 ways:
With the flip attached: simply open the flip
Without the flip attached: click on the speaker icon during a call, and check 'speakerphone'
Disabling the speakerphone when you close the flip is a safety precaution so that you don't forget just in case you hold it up to your ear.
It's not the perfect solution, but I think it's the best setup for what the P800/900 has to offer... I wish they included the proximity sensor of the older Ericsson R520... that was a great system... unlike the one found on the later Nokia 7650.
My main gripe with the proximity sensors is that all it does is shut off the speakerphone when held close to your ear (or any other object)... it should re-activate the speakerphone as well, when it's not near any object.

You're probably right, but I wonder if that does any good, since the speakerphone speaker is on the back side of the phone. I'd have to hold it to my face backwards to blast it in my ear, and I could do that just as easily with the flip open

are you saying that the p800 does not have speaker phone in flip closed mode, because mine does, and i get to it the same way that you described. am i not supposed to have this feature?

I just got pm from @jplacson who has a p800, he corected me that the p8 does have it, niether of us had noticed.
Bet you can't unlock in "flip closed", just by using the jog though !!
