I think it can with the Revo shareware software (can't remeber name now). It allows the Revo to work to the correct infra-red standard (not true standard without it).

I deffinetly remeber beaming pictures & contact details between my Revo & T68 but can't remember if I did it between a Revo & P800 (no longer have the Revo)

To enable modern Symbian devices "talk" with the old EPOC machines like Psion Revo, Psion netBook, Psion Series 5mx etc, you have to use a third party shareware application from Psiloc called PLBeam. Visit http://www.psiloc.com/psion/eng/plbeam/index.html for more informations.

I use a netBook with a P800 and always transfer files to and from both machines. The built-in infrared engine in Psion Revo doesnt allow it to connect to the newest infrared IrOBEX standards and using PLBeam enhances the feature.

However, if you want to use P800 for modem, it doesnt require PLBeam. It is only used to transfer files.

Trust the above assists.

Thanks Aiwarikiar.

I've tried this and it doesn't seem to want to work.

After downloading and extracting it (to pIBEAM.sis) I clicked on it with my Revo in the cradle and it says "no phone is connected".

Now I know the utility is for the EPOC device but just to be sure I connected the P800 to my PC. The program TRIED to install on the P800 but gave the "Network not supported message".

Having attempted 5 more times to get it to install on my Revo I am lost.

Can you suggest anything else?

Regards

Mike

Dear Mike,

Yeah, PLBeam is for EPOC and you must install it to your Revo before you can use it to enable your Revo "shake hands" with your P800. From your explanation above, it seems that you install the P800 PC Suite and PsiWin on the same PC, right? This always happened if you have both installed on 1 PC and your PC reads the PLBeam.sis as a program for P800 instead of for the Psion Revo.

Now, there are several options:-
1- Uninstall your P800 PC Suite (Dont worry, all your backup files wont be deleted), leaving only the PsiWin and install PLBeam using your PC with the Revo sitting on the cradle. After everything is installed, you can reinstall the P800 PC Suite. (This option is kinda tedious, however).

2- If you can connect your Revo to the internet via PC using it's cradle or using infrared mobilephone ,direct download the PLBeam file from the Revo's Web or Opera and install it directly on the Revo. If it is in Zip format, you can unzip it using RMRZip available from www.rmrsoft.com

3- If you have an infrared enabled laptop, or your friends', download the PLBeam file from the internet and beam it to your Revo using the infrared.

4- Get a USB infrared port and plug it to your PC/laptop's USB port. Transfer the PLBeam file to your Revo by beaming it.

Sorry Mike, AFAIK, there is no other way of making the Revo infrared compatible with P800 except using PLBeam.

Trust the above assists.

thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you!

I was de-installing PC Suite whilst you were typing your reply but - It works! (interestingly your suggestion of "beaming" from my laptop forgets the inability of my Revo to "see" the laptop to receive pIBEAM )

In fact I went a little crazy and once I got my PC to "see" the Revo I installed pIBEAM, xPEN and C-Pen as I wasn`t sure which was best. So far as it is now late, C-pen looks good but I will let you know tomorrow.

Originally I had intended to buy a Pocketop keyboard since I often need to compose quite long mails and thoughts etc.

However I now can put my "shelved" Revo to great use and get better battery life from the P800 in the process.

I was close to buying a Sony PEG-UX50 so in effect you`ve saved me £500 and the thanks of my wife.

Best wishes

Mike

Dear Mike,

Glad to know that it works for you

I started using Revo Plus back in 2000. And the beuty of EPOC?Symbian have caught me ever since. But Revo Plus' capabilities are limited. It doesnt have extra memory, no backlight etc...etc... So I upgraded to Revo's BIG Brother, the netBook and I have a virtual mobile office. I can surf internet using WiFi, GPRS etc, etc. The option is limitless.... Paired with a P800, I really have nothing to complain.

Cheers.

I too have had the series 3, the 3a, 3c & 5. In fact I broke the Series 5 3 weeks ago (duh!) and I still believe that had the best keyboard ever.

I "gave-in" at Dixons at Heathrow yesterday and bought a Pocketop keyboard. Jah kindly emailed me a driver but I cannot get it to work so I`ve got the "unnecessary purchase blues".

I`m beginning to think that the best keyboard for a P800/P900 is a Revo! - since it`s cheap, you don`t need to keep it aligned and you can save the P800 battery life whilst you type.

I noticed Netbooks are now in the £200+ range and I always liked them but thought them way way overpriced for what they were (£695 original price wasn`t it?). I think Epoc in colour would be excellent.

Would you recommend a Netbook over any other clamshell type device? I have a company laptop so don`t need more weight but if a Netbook would really give me the freedom I would like I could revert to using a desktop Pc and then doing my cerebral stuff on the Netbook.

How heavy are they?

Sorry for the constant questions!

Best regards

Mike

Dear Mike,

Visit http://www.foxpop.co.uk/roadtesting/netbook_cover.htm if you want to know why netBook is better than any other clamshell machines out there. I think the article give some interesting points on whether to choose netBook or not. I really recommend it over other mahines because of it's robustness, long battery life, instant switch-on etc. I have one netBook and one MnetBook (aka MalayBook, MBook etc).

Did you install the driver for Pocketop keyboard correctly? Because I have installed it in my P800 and I managed to get it running without problems. I borrowed the keyboard from my friend who is a Palm user. You need to have a filemanager installed in your P800, locate the location of the driver and launch it. That's all.

Hope the above assists,

Rgds
