Does anyone know Cingular's schedule for rolling out 3G in Southern California?

Well, that is better than T-Mobile. When I contacted them about date they said "we don't know when, or if, it will rollled out."

I guess T-Mobile has so slim margins that they can't afford it.

Well, not in every case.....some carriers had 3G a while ago, not as fast as WCDMA but still much faster than GPRS.

There's a simple reason for the US being behind in cell phone coverage, lack of demand. The US has traditionally had better landline coverage than either Europe or Japan both local service and long distance. Landlines in Europe and Japan were always extremely expensive to install and most of the telcos charged calls by the minute. The US was enjoying unlimited local calling and insanely cheap long distance rates.

Because of the high population densities of both Europe and Japan wireless made a lot of sense. Reaching any number of people wirelessly was far cheaper than attempting to connect them with wires. Wireless access in Europe and Japan became as cheap as wired access in the US.

Chiming in late, but you are right: severe lack of demand. People want coverage. SMS, MMS, wireless internet, picture messaging, etc, are just not in demand by seemingly 95 % of customers. Carriers advertise these features simply to show how great their network is.

On the other hand, sales reps need to spend more time trying to sell the features, t put them in users minds.
