How does the outer screen notify u of a new text msg? does it just show up an envelope or does it say '1 new message' etc. On the inside screen, does it still shopw up the persons pic of callers/txt'ers

I read here on esato that 'caller id' will work only if you switch off 'auto answer'. Not sure about your other problem

Ok I just tested this with open to answer to set both on and off and the results are the same. When the first message comes in the top line of the outer display shows an envelope and the bottom line shows the name of the person (or presumably the number if its not someone in your phonebook). The second message that comes in still shows the envelope but the second line says "New message".
Inside when you open the flip is the same as the T610 where it says "New messages: 2" and "Read now?"

just for further interest on this... in standby mode the outer display show the time in large digits but you can press the side volume buttons and this is what happens...
push 1... backlight comes on so you can see the time in darkness
push 2... the display reverts to small font showing gprs indicator, signal indicator, symbol if mute is on, symbols if bluetooth is on etc etc, battery level and current time
push 3... the time changes to date
push 4... current profile
push 5... phone model
push 6... my mobile number
push 7... back to time
after a delay of not pushing any button the dislpay reverts to big time again
