i got mine at 44000 16 bit stereo quality.....i heard they should be around 16000 8 bit mono....can my settings damage the speaker on my p800?

Don't worry, they won't. You can lower the bitrate as much as you want, even until you can't hear the sample anymore.

and seeing as the ringer only uses one speaker... theres no need for a stereo ringtone

According to SE the optimum sttings for the speaker are:
"Recommended WAV file format for the loudspeaker is 22.050kHz sampling rate, 8-bit samples and 1 channel (mono)"

i can get my little ditties down from 200k to about 40k using 1bit 5khz option on gwave sound editor (freeware).
sound ok for ring tones
