I'm going to buy a P900 (in the UK), but I am unsure whether to buy on Orange now or wait until Vodafone releases it (hopefully early next month).

My question is, if I buy an Orange P900 does that mean I can't download and apply the subsequent firmware updates from ? Would I need to wait for Orange to release a special firmware update? (I guess I would have to take the phone to an Orange approved service centre?)

What about Vodafone, I assume they will be using the standard firmware, so I should be able to update no problem?

It would be a huge pain if I cannot make use of the online firmware updates.

Orange P900 has no different firmware from the rest of the P900s in the market. The only thing Orange does, is to add a few more pictures and start up/shut down videos to make it more orangee. Oh and it's locked to its network, so u cant use it with another simcard unless you unlock it yourself, which is pretty easy these days.

@mkouk

So does that mean I would be able to use the online firmware upates from with an Orange P900? I thought I had heard in the past that people had problems with getting their Orange phones updated because of the Orange customisations.

@drinker

I wouldn't count on being able to upgrade the P900 firmware yourself, Orange were a pain with this with the 800 and I expect them to be the same with the 900. I expect them to allow self upgrades eventually but I bet it will be after everybody else has it.

Orange - I think this is a conspiracy. Orange make it difficult for us to own a Symbian Smartphone while at the same time making it very easy for the MS Smartphone users to use Orange. Could this be because Orange does not really want Symbian phones to be successful?

Orange make it difficult to use phones full-stop if you want to move away from their way of doing things, logos, 'special' software etc. The SPV update is being held up also by Orange as it goes through their 'testing'.

Easiest way to de-brand Orange Handsets

1. take out home insurance
2. stand near side of bathtub/toilet/
3. sneeze hard enough to make you drop said P900 (pepper can be used to enhance realistic sneezing) into selected wet stuff
4. Claim total loss of P900 at sim-free price from insurance taken in step 1
5. buy sim-free from normal outlet
6. et voila!
