I got mine from carphone warehouse on a vodafone upgrade and it was unbranded and unlocked so you are better off going to them anyway

I got mine from mobile phone centre unlocked on a vodaphone anytime 200 contract. There's absolutely no point in getting it from vodaphone unless you like all the crap the plaster all over the phone and inside the phone (firmware).
I remember nothing annoyed me more when I had my orange phone than the fact that there was aload of 'predefined' orange pictures in the my pictures folder, and I couldn't delete them. They took up loads of space

I seem to remember reading that Vodafone would not be selling the Z600 in it`s own stores and so it will not be a VodaLive handset. Any handsets bought from say CPW are probably unlocked and unbranded which is good news.

Well also here in Switzerland, they sell vodafone live ! z600's. But these are in affiliation with the most popular swiss network Swisscom.
So at least all the firmware work is done. I would not understand why they would not do a version for the U.K.
