The phone was original announced at the end of October 2003. From the initial specification, we know that Sendo X will be the strongest Symbian Series 60 smartphone. Mr Brogan from Sendo brought us a wonderful powerpoint presentation showing us the detail specification is listed in the following pages. Now we present the major great features of Sendo X. In the hardware side, Mr. Brogan claimed that the "X" utilized 2 processors to handle the operation. An ARM 9 120MHz CPU is responsible for PDA and phone application. ARM 7 and a DSP GraphiX co processor handle the graphic presentation. "SoniX" engine enhanced the sound and ring tones by introducing the stereo speakers. Mr. Brogan also emphasized the large memory size of Sendo X. It comes with 64MB flash memory, and 32MB is free for the users. Comparing with existing Series 60 smartphone (Nokia 6600), the memory is 5 times more. Users can store up to 45 mins movie clips to the phone memory.
In the software side, Sendo X uses Nokia's Series 60 technology; the original interface is not strange to us. Sendo does several enhancements on Series 60 interface. The first is the time and signal bar added on every page. Also Sendo implements the "Now Screen", a similar technology with Microsoft "Home Screen". Users can add their favorite features, URL link, and video or music files shortcut to the front page. The background image is customized too. Sendo uses "See", "Hear", "Do", and "Connect"
to describe the "X" phone main features. Briefly,
See: 65K TFT screen, digital camera and camcorder with 4x digital zoom
Hear: 64 polyphonic ring tones, MP3 player, and stereo speaker
Do: Email clients, up to 40 types document viewers, PIM application
Connect: GSM triband, Bluetooth, GPRS class 8, JAVA application, MMC / SD card expansion
The first trial
Mr. Brogan also brought us the few engineering samples to us to have a first trial. In his presentation, Mr. Brogan emphasized the phone was for the professional users, and used aluminum as the material. We compared the feel with Nokia 3650. The design of Sendo X is more elegant and straightforward. It reduces the strange looking feel from Nokia innovation design. However, the size of keypads is too small, making them not comfortable to press. The five ways controlling trackball is not easy to press too. The phone is shorter, but have similar width with Nokia 3650. We cannot describe it as small, while we still accept it as a smartphone. We tried a short time, finding that the first prototype not as strong as its described. The Sendo X 65K TFT screen is not brighter than only 4096 STN screen of Nokia 3650. The processor is not pretty fast. Although we give not good comments, we still remind our readers to wait and see because the samples we tried are still prototype. We really hope Sendo X notice that and can make improvement before its launch. We also tried the Now! Screen. The sample shown to us is not as complicated as MS Home screen, while it also makes a different feel from boring Series 60 interface.
