what is the perpose of the real time clock in the service menu

it is the equivalent of CMOS clock on a PC motherboard. this real time clock keeps the current time such as when the phone is switched off.

So you mean that the test just checks that 'clock' or battery to see if the phone will keep the date & time when it is switched off ?
