I was just contemplating and reminiscing too during the good old days when our lives were simple and yet not very ambitious - with the majority of people still has no mobile fones. We only think on how to survive on a 3x a day meal, how to finish school and get a job immediately and start and raise our own families. Indeed, without any judgemental argument, that celfones had totally invaded our lust for hi-tech gadgets. Considering the very hard times we are experiencing now - specially in my place were majority of the population is under the poverty level -Manila, it is very unattainable, literally to speak, to own a simple celfone at present, specially if you are earning less, than you should do. That's why it is very rampant in the streets that you see people who are less fortunates stealing fones, just to be included in the said fad - which I guess is not totally right !!! Though I would agree that celfones really made our lives easier and comfortable via connecting with our loved ones, it does not still, in any effect, compensate the disadvantages it contributes to the society by and large. A simple colored brand new celfone costs around US$ 250.00 in my place at presesnt, that can already feed a family of 4 for a month on a 3x a day square meal, or even can send a child in a public school for at least 6 months, or even a year. The real bad effect about this is that many people are borrowing money just to have a fone, and to include himself and be accepted in the society. Statistics here also shows that many couples were disbanding because of celfones, wives caught their hubbies having an affair with others thru their celfones - sms, mms/colored photos/videos having sex too. I may well be aware of this because I spend most of my time in the celfone shop, I am not an employee, just a keen observer. The worst thing of all is that some celfone companies like Nokia, produces/releases fones almost every 2 to 3 months here in Manila, resulting to owners wanting to buy a new one, w/c in effect will result to money borrowings or worst, closure of their bank accounts - just imagine all the money that could have been saved because of these very delinquent habit of changing fones more often ???, that money will be needed more in the future, specially in emergency times of need. Well, celfones certainly made our lives easier, but our pockets drain. Celfones are truly for the people who are rich, and not for the masses. What's your take . . .

I certainly don't agree that "Ambition" only arrived when Cellphones came along, but i live in UK,
here a P900 can be bought on contract (with around 7 hours of free calls to any network each month)
the total price including all the 12 monthly payments comes to less than the average weekly wage, so they are not expensive here.

I do think its a shame that its almost impossible to get on in society without one though.

I certainly agree with the 1st poster but at a certain level:I think that spending money is a bad habit..when u dont earn enough. It's bad when u go bankrupt or borrow money to buy a newer model u dont really need but thats cuz some r pure and simple ignorant and iresponsable. Not cellphones r2blame but ppl.And u know what?I do believe that cellphones changed our lives ONLY for the better.I live in a country where having a phone like my own is almost a sacrilege thinking that there r ppl here earning60 /month This message was posted from a T610

Pachy, I forgot to include nor to substantiate my post as per se, I am pertaining here to the whole effect it had made - globally, just think of the people starving in Africa, majority of the people here in the Asian region is under the poverty level, America is also feeling the heat after the 9-11, they are truly in finacial crisis right now. They say that they are the world's richest nation??? Well think again, their debts have accumulated maybe in the "quadrillion" of dollars to date, just a rough estimate here mate. Lucky for you 'cause you live in UK, and maybe came from a well-to-do family, and so goes for the people who owns a P8 or P9 at present. I still prefer the good old times where they use 2 cans (at the rear ends) with a loooong string attaching the cans in the middle - that's what I call a revolutionary fone, with no debts attached! Pachy, it's not he does not agree with your post, maybe because he sees matters in a different light/view. Every opinion is very much and are highly respected here.

Damn! How much does the average Jo make in the UK? I make just less than 350 pounds a week equivelant in Australia. And I'm quite well off, being a graduate doctor. Thats very good money.
To my knowledge, a P900 is a good $580 pounds outright is it not (checked it on mobilefly.com).
You'd surely pay more than that on a 24month plan? Eveen 30 pounds for 24 months is 720 pounds!

Could you clarify that pachy?

@jojo51069, Not from a rich family, but wealth is spread a lttle more evenly here, the US has been in decline for decades, most of europes used phones end up in Africa, so ttheree are phones available, but there are two different kinds of phone use, one is for keeping in contct & the other is the high end/fashion side of it,
it's best to keep them seperate when talking about a "Need" for a phone.
My comments on price of phones in UK may look like i'm bragging,
this is not what i intended, its important to point out that although electronics are fairly cheap here, other things are not,
houses for example are becoming far to expensive for people starting out,
where i live there is nothing available below £150,000 (14,160,538.18 PHP Philippines Pesos), people are getting into serious debt finding somewhere to live.

Yeah Pachy, there are truly some certain things that are cheap in your place, while quite expensive on the other side of the globe. Like for instance, (correct me if I read your reply right, ok), that the cheapest house you can buy in your place is 150K pounds, which, in your computation, results to 14 million in our money - well, that is really expensive. Two of my siblings bought a house (given by our parents) for Php 3 Million each, roughly 60,000 ++ in US$. Labor come in very cheap in my place compared that in the US, which is almost 10x the price here. Say, a simple haircut here just costs 80 cents in US$, while I believe it's $30.00 in Bush's place.
In a nutshell, I still firmly believe that the introduction of hi-grade/end celfones in our civilization has some bad/negative/disadvantages effects too. ??? ! Specially to the poorest of the poor nations (like Manila) at present.
Yeah 701, 'dog eats dog', and cats gets to eat fish right ??? But if granted a wish, I would still prefer to live my life during the earlier years of the existence of our mother Earth, less people, less pollution, less envy among people, simple lives to live, simple ambitions - unlike in my country, where politicians makes unattainable dreams come true by emptying the nation's coffers, less killing, less hatred, less adultery, less sin, less money-lesser problems.
I would rather walk the long distance, than to ride a lamborghini where I am heavily in debt .
