> WAV play failure on P800
Bookmark topic
Hi all,
Before you ask, I ran a search on "P800 WAV" and got four posts that weren't relevant! Any help here would be appreciated...
I copied over some WAVs last night to my P800, and they were visible in the relevant folders in the audio player. I tried to play them, but got an error back for each one. These WAVs were taken from various places in Windows, and all play on the PC.
Are there any encoding issues to do with WAVs, or should the unit just be able to play any old WAV?
Thanks, your help and wisdom is appreciated.

WAVs can be compressed with some codecs that the P800 doesn't understand. The wav should be normal PCM data and it should play OK. I have made several ringtones myself and everything works OK. I also copied some misc. wavs from my collection and they sound OK also.
so make sure your wavs are not compressed or encoded with some strange format. (open the wav with sound recorder for instance, and check its properties..it should say PCM xx bit yy kHz)

I've gotta disagree about Wavs being compressed, but agree with the point about the type of Wav; it may be they're at a sample rate or bit depth the P800 can't handle.

You can compress wavs with uLAW codec for example. I don't know if the P800 is capable of playing these. Or, then, as you say, the sample frequency or bit depth are too high.

Surely if you compress a WAV, it is no longer a WAV?
"WAV files are probably the simplest of the common formats for storing audio samples. Unlike MPEG and other compressed formats, WAVs store samples "in the raw" where no pre-processing is required other that formatting of the data."

there r codecs for compressing wav files and they will still wav . there is the ulaw and the A law that both play on p800.The GSM codec is fine too.Make sure the wav are 16 bit max and not 24bit(if u have a sound card that can play them). Also make sure it is a wav file not a mp3 file with wav header.

Okay, I may be wrong, but I thought WAVs were the audio equivalent of BMPs.

No u r not wrong these codecs are not compressor like mp3 for example.but they offer a little reduce in size except the GSM that greatly reduce the size by lowering the bitrate only

memory-ru thinks the manual doesn't state what WAV bit depths or sample rates the P800 can handle.
anyone got any idea?

As long as the WAV file was made using PCM or GSM6.1 codecs, they should play fine. Use PCM if you want the best sounding WAV through your headset... use the GSM codec if you only plan to use it as a ringtone through the P800 speaker (GSM codec reduces PCM WAV file size by 1/10 original size)
