Barely a year old, Sony Ericsson's original smart phone, the P800 is already a design classic. The new version has everything that phone had, but more and better.
Road Test
It feels like it's been a long wait, but the follow-up to Sony Ericsson's ground-breaking smart phone, the P800, has been worth it. The more sober appearance of the new model is an improvement on the P800, whose pale blue and silver looked a bit plasticky and cheap. The removable flipcover now looks a bit more worthwhile, with more solid, metallic buttons, unlike the original's flimsy effort. The sleek metal stylus which disappears into a plug at the top of the phone is also a big improvement on the fiddly little affair that came with the P800.
Aside from the cosmetic changes, other improvements to the phone are more in the way of upgrades rather than any sweeping revamp. It now has a 65,000-colour screen, for example, rather than 4,096, memory is bigger and battery life has improved, but the most notable change is the video camera which allows you to record home movies which can be as long as available memory allows, which could be several minutes. You can also send them on via MMS or email and stream video from the internet over the phone's GPRS connection.
Things To Know
Crucially, Sony Ericsson hasn't compromised its flagship device by changing any of the things that made the original model one of the best phone/PDA hybrids available. It's still a powerful business tool which you can synchronise with your PC/Mac or other devices either directly via cable, infrared or Bluetooth or over the air. You can manage your emails and view documents as well as access the world wide web using the quick and efficient Opera browser. It's Java capability means you can be constantly adding to its range of applications and games, and the improved memory (48MB of RAM to save all your contacts and applications instead of 32MB) means there's more room to store them, though you can also make use of the 128MB SD Memory Stick Duo which comes supplied. It also comes with a range of applications on its accompanying CD, including 3D racing game V-Rally, which requires you to turn the phone on its side for playing in widescreen.
