Just got my new P900 direct from the local O2 store. Just walked in and they had one in stock - signed the O2 400 plan at £45 per month and walked out with my new toy.

It is just awesome. Apparently it has free GPRS until 31st Jan but does anyone know the difference between O2 WAP GPRS and O2 Mobileweb and which one should be used for web browsing and email?

I hate that you have to use an 0870 number to call member services - is there a free call number from the phone with O2? (my other phone is a T-mobile)

Just installed Sman so off to play

Thanks

Steve

I don't know what MobileWeb is but I was told that the free GPRS only applies to the O2 GPRS. So don't use the MobileWeb thingy.

Hi!

Well, if you head over to www.o2.co.uk there are links there which explain the differences between wap gsm, wap gprs and mobileweb.

As far as I understood it, wap gsm and wap gprs are internet connections which allow us to access WAP enabled pages. GSM was the old method of connection which has continuous connection (and is charged by time!), while GPRS is data packet transfer where data is sent as bursts of information (we are charged by the amount of data transferred!)

Mobileweb, is based on GPRS technology, but the main difference is that it allows us to surf the internet like any other connection, and not just only wap enabled pages! That's really cool...

The promo from O2 only applies to WAP GPRS though, so that's something to be aware of...

And another note, don't bother asking O2 staff about this! I spent almost an hour explaining to a customer service gal the other day exactly this...and all this I gleamed from their own website! She was telling me about how Mobileweb was charged per minute time, etc etc...it's specifically stated on their site that Mobileweb uses GPRS technology and is charged by data transfer amount...shows you how well they know their own stuff! Happened that I was on my lunch hour the other day and so found my own amusement at proving her wrong and making sure she knew exactly what she was talking about......

*in case anyone wants to know my actual reason for calling, it was to confirm about their free GPRS promo!!*

Should be 14 days return policy everywhere I suppose! By the way, I wonder what merchants do with consumer's return products? Perhaps they repackage it and stack it on the shelf again!
Luvky those who get them...

It was free - not a penny changed hands.

However I wish I could get the darn thing to work with my Sony Clie - the Clie can browse the Internet and can send email but I just can't configure it to receive email. The P900 does it all ok 'internally'.

And O2 are the worst company for customer support. Their Email support service no longer works, they charge for customer support on their 0870 numbers, they keep you waiting for ages for an answer during which time you are paying for the call, they don't know anything technical when they do answer and they bounce you from dept to dept. And their web site is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard!

After waiting 20 mins for an answer to a question I gave up and phoned their 0800 sales line - it was answered on the SECOND RING so I claimed to be researching phones for my company - asked the technical questions, got the answers and said I'd think about whether to buy from them!

Almost wish I could go back to T-mobile

Steve
