I would certainly not think that you could use the P900 firmware on your P800.

Because even if the phone is almost identical do you think that sony is stupid to allow you to do it? they think of something for sure so NO!

the phone is basically the same however a dounut and a bagel are basically the same till you eat them.its been discussed many time on esato since the p900 was announced
it may be possible but the question should be why would se (a company out to make profits) want to.
they did it once with the t68 -t68i but that was just because mobile phone operators where not ready to launch there mms service and they wanted to be first to market with a color screen phone.
it would be commercial suicide for them to offer a free upgrade to p800 users as very few would go out and buy a p900.
which looking and reading this board many have already and many more set to follow when contract etc run out.
it doesnt change the fact that the p800 is still a great phone, and the p900 will also be still a great phone when the p1000(or whatever they call it) comes out

1. UIQ 2.1 is designed for 65K colour support, could not work with the P800

2. UIQ 2.1 needs more ROM then is available on the P800

The P900 has more memory, therefore the firmware takes up more memory as well (this was one of the main reasons they upgraded the size of the ROM), UIQ2.1 supports a 64K LCD, meaning that even if you were able to hack the P900 firmware to make it smaller it would cause immense problems when trying to display 16 bits of data on a 12 bit screen. You can see this on VRally (it really sucks on a P800). So either buy a P900 or stick with your old, maybe outdated P800.

I think the best reason anyone can give you as to why you can't do what your asking is ... 'just because!'.
