My PC!

I've had winXP on a hp PC(bought new)since july and when i turn my PC on this afternoon it would'nt turn on,it just froze on the memory test page, stopped at about 6976k when it normally goes much higher than that.As i did'nt know what to do i switched the thing off after about 10-15 minutes of waiting, started it up again and the screen stayed blank, then after trying again the monitor would'nt even switch on but the hard drive did

So out comes the troubleshoot guide,i thought stuff it,it says system restore here so i'll do that as it says i wont lose files and shit,i was just in the middle of this process but before i could click on anything more it did it anyway after giving me a message that it could'nt continue!
After hours of flapping around with it i have had to reinstall the broadband to get back online but i have lost all my themes, wallpapers, thousands of miditones,PC wallpapers,mp3 music, favourites,a few SE ad's and probly every single picture taken with my Sony Ericsson phones

I am so pi**ed off!
Funny thing tho, theme creator pro is still there
Well i'd like to know what i can do to back up future files in case this microsoft bullshit nightmare happens again! I got some stuff on my web and wap sites but thats only a small amount of stuff i had,at least i still got that stuff tho
One more thing,i cant set any pics as wallpapers on my PC now,i get some error in a box..........Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!!!
EDIT;So my PC is like it was from new except for the setting wallpaper problem and hp tools dont work either

Lol thats why i have 2 hd of 120gb the first is daily use the second is backup and some files are on a laptop. I recomment to make backups to avoid such problems use norton ghost
And keep the backups on safe place burn them on dvd rw or use an external hard drive

If place on your hd/dvd/cd don't allow to backup all what you want and if you have good inet connection just backup links on some files instead of putting themselves, i, for example, always bookmark sites/pages, when i download smthng from 'em. Btw, it will be a good idea to make name of the next microsoft os, after longhorn and blackcomb, Microsoftİ Bullshitİ! :-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D

I could, but it would be a waste of a post. Doesn't really contribute to the general discussion so PM was more appropriate.

gee, you guys are all up late this morning. depending on how much material you need to back up, usb flash mem isn't bad. a network connection to a pc is also useful, and the flashmem comes in handy for transferring if the network connection fails (as happened over the weekend when my father tried to upgrade from Win98SE to Win2000). i found it to be more efficient than using a CD/DVD-R/RW.

Anyone know what this pop up message means;
Insert CDROM
Please insert your CDROM with the Virtual Truck program.Looking for file:
D:/installs/TeraEth/VTruck.exe
(forward slashes should be backward slashes)

probably exactly what it says. do you know what program it's referring to, and what that program does?
perhaps you should condsider a full system scan with your antivrus program (after you update the definitions).

mcafee, and most other AV software, will stop programs writing to system files. whenever you do a software install, and sometimes a repair through windows, you need to disable the AV software first. however, there is usually an option to continue regardless (depending on your AV settings).
run a system scan with mcafee before you continue, because it may pick up some other problems. you may also need to reinstall XP.
