I recently bought a P900, my first of its kind since I stopped using Palm's. The P900 has already caused me some headache. I initially had some problems syncing with my Mac. I got messages saying that my (quite long) list of to-do items didn't fit due to too little memory, so I upgraded the firmware to R2B02, after which it worked just fine.

I then added five IMAP mail accounts, four of which had a couple of hundred mail messages each. It worked well until just recently, when I started seeing the following behavior:

I turn on the phone, enter the pin code and wait for the program list to appear. I tap the Message application and get this message:

Program closed
Program MailInit
Reason code BAFL
Reason number 4

I then tap the Message application again and can enter it. I enter one of the mail accounts and get the list of e-mail messages. I then tap Send/receive and get this:

Program closed
Program Messages
Reason code BAFL
Reason number 4

The inbuilt browser is also having problems connecting through GPRS, but Opera can connect just fine.

What is going on here? What does those messages mean? S-E's support site doesn't give me a clue, and neither does Symbian's. What has caused this behavior? My guess is the e-mail accounts, but the internal memory has 5.5 MB free and I only download the headers through IMAP.

And - what can I do about it? Perform a full firmware restore or something simpler?

You could try to delete some of the mail accounts. Not that you should need to... Hmmmmm. The best thing to do is to call support, if you are lucky they are good (in some countries the suck). If they don't help you solve the problem all I can say is that you should upgrade the software again. Make a backup and upgrade it at home from s Online update service.
Good luck, and welcome to esato!

Already tried deleting mail accounts. All of them. Once I got home from my trip, the first thing I did (just did, in fact) was to update the software again, ignoring all the warnings about that the software was already up-to-date. And now it works. Just wonder for how long this time. However, I'll make sure not to add overly large mail accounts this time (such as one of those on which I receive mailing lists on).

There are two types or memory you need to be aware of:

1. c: drive, which is for storing your data and apps. In general the recommendation is to install all apps, except Sman, on the Duo to keep c: free for those apps that only use the c: drive, like email and Agenda etc

2. RAM. Now there is 16mb of RAM but once the OS has loaded, only about 6.5mb is available for the user. The best thing to do is to use a Task Manager, like Sman or Task Manager from Symbinaware, to manage RAM.

From your description of the problem you may have had corrupted data or firmware. The re-flash seems to have cured the problem. Regular back-ups / sync may be a way to deal with this in the future.

There are three types of GPRS connection here in the UK: MMS, WAP and Internet. Opera will only work with a full internet GPRS connection.

Jah is right. The built in browser uses wap connection via gprs, while Opera uses internet over GPRS connection. So with regards to that matter there is nothing wrong with your phone
