Hi
Is there a technical reason why so few people write their programs to work in the flip-closed mode? Is it just greed at the thought of all the extra pixels they have on offer?

I suspected it wasn't even possible until i installed S-MAN and noticed it did add itself to the app list, and works, when flip is shut.

A technical reason i'm considering is maybe the cpu clockspeed is reduced when in the flip is shut to save power?
Either way, most programs do not require the full screen resolution in my opinion, and would benefit from being able to use the T9 keypad - especially games!!

What do you guys think?

I think I heard somewhere that only C++ progs work in flip closed mode, and it is hard to be creative with C++ unless you want to Create Typical Programs, Java does not work in flip closed, However if you made a JAVA emulator through C++ you could get alot more programs, such as java games in flip closed mode.

Yazan24 my man,

Sounds reasonable. It would have been nice to be able to play chess, surf through wap, use more Icons or a tracker device showing the today screen...

I can't honestly see anyone coding an emulator of an object orientated language (java) ... in an object orientated language (c++) ... hehe

In all seriousness, I think it's a technical limitation of the 0S that prevents more active dev.. coupled with the lack of support & api's from SE & symbian/UIQ.

Any real native symbian app can detect the flip closing/opening and have the ability to provide a flip closed mode. Anything else (pjava, midlets, appforge vb) cannot.

It isn't really a SE limitation as these are more or less third party products (with the javavm provided by symbian). Still, it would have been great to see a SE modified java framework that would allow for flip closed handling in at least proper pjava apps. Not likely to happen now though, and even if added as an extension to pjava all existing apps would have to be modified to make use of it.

The excellent Traffic program has just been updated and works brilliantly in flip-closed mode on the P900 so you can now see UK traffic maps without needing to open the flip all the time.

Not sure if it does the same on the P80p 'cos of the reduced size of screen when flip closed.
