I have problem with a corrupted MS Duo 128MB - now every time I insert the MSD into my Sony USB MS reader Windows XP recognises that I've inserted a Memorystick but when I try to access the MSD it gives me the message "The disk in drive XX is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?".

Everything was working fine until I put the MSD into the USB reader to delete some MP3s to make way for some video files I wanted to transfer from my P900's C: drive to the PC via the MSD. I deleted the MP3 files then inserted the MSD back into my P900 and used SMAN to transfer the video files across to the MSD. I then took out the MSD and reinserted it into the USB reader, whereupon Windows starts giving me this "drive not formatted" error message.

The MSD is definitely corrputed somehow as the P900 won't recognises when I insert it, and when it tries to read it the P900 hangs.

I've restarted the P900, and with the MSD in the P900 at restart the phone hangs too, and doesn't even past the splash screen.

Any ideas what went wrong?

Any ideas on how to salvage the files on the MSD, or how to fix it?

Just place the MS DUO 128MB back into your p900, format disk. Yr P900 will be able to read the DUO again.

Just make sure you back up your data on the DUO into your pc or any other means of storage.

Had this problem too and only by reformatting can the DUO be read again.

I have heard that with XP, the write to external device progress bar is not accurate and if you remove the Duo too early from the reader/writer this probelm can occur. Leave a few seconds before you remove the Duo from the card r/w.

Thanks for your help guys.

@ Jah
My Sony USB reader (model MSAC-US2) has an access LED so I'm pretty sure I didn't remove the MSD during a read/write action.

I'm also pretty sure now that what happened was I removed the MSD from the P900 before it finished W/R to the MSD. Why didn't SE put a cheapo activity LED on the MSD port? Every other piece of euipment I have which uses MS has one - e.g. three year old Sony Clie, P5 digital camera etc...

Yeah, I've heard that formatting with Win is not recommended too. I did eventually format with the P900. Luckily I put essential programs on the phone's internal memory.

Moral of the story guys is that you should only remove the MSD after switching the phone off, or make damn sure you wait sufficiently long after a read/write operation.

Happy New Year!
