It's vital! It's the software that makes your phone work, without it all you would have is a little box full of electronics that don't do anything.

Bit like having a computer without an operating system (Windows, Linux, Unix, Jaguar etc.)

You have to take the phone to an SE service center (or large mobile phone store) to have it 'flashed' with the newest firmware, you can't do it yourself.

If you don't know where your nearest SE service center is, any mobile store that sells SE stuff should be able to tell you or send the phone off for you. Like I said, some larger stores can flash the phone themselves.

The cost of doing this depends on where you are in the world. In the UK, firmware upgrades are free whilst the phone is still under warranty but in some countries there is a small charge unless the phone is actually faulty.

...and you're brave enough! Flashing the phone yourself will void the warranty and is not guaranteed to work.

Don't do flashing myself but i've good knowledge of people doing phone flashing for a living. On average 10 flashes a day without any problems.
I junked my brand new notebook the last time i flashed its Bios. Luckily, the guy at service centre replaces the motherboard FOC. No questions asked.
