Taking that small cover off by following the manual is WAY too easy,it JUST what SE want you to do, much better is to make a clean cut with a power tool, some people resort to a small hobby hacksaw if no 240v power supply is available.
Remember these phones are rugged, no amount of ill treatment is a huge problem
