I sent jpg's to my T68i over IR plenty of times, no problems.
I just take a picture I like make it 101x80 pixels
save as jpg, chooses a quality that usualy makes the jpg end up
at arround 15kb then send it to the phone using IR.
Then I can view it and use it as bgpic or incomming call pic etc.
No problems at all.

The maximum dimentions for GIF images are 160x120 pixels. With GIF images larger than this you will see the red-cross symbol instead. On the T68i, GIF images with larger dimentions will be centered and cropped to fit the screen size.
With JPEG formats, the dimention limit is 640x480. Images larger than 101x80 pixels will be scaled down to fit the screen size.
I have also noticed that images transfered to the phone uses more memory than the image filesize itself.
Example:
Before transfering a 5873 byte large image, free memory was reported to be 570Kb. After the transfer I have 554Kb free memory left. The extra memory used (9kb) is problably beeing used by the "thumbnail" version of the image (+ some extra storing information?)
