> Anyone tried EDGE yet???

I am being told that AT&T and Cingular are currently implementing EDGE on their networks and that it is up and running in a few cities and most cities by the end of 2004.
Has anyone tried it yet? What was your impression?

I'm surprised there were no replies to this thread. I guess I have to get myself an EDGE phone and try it myself.

Some EDGE info from
http://www.cellular.co.za/edge.htm
"The next generation of data heading towards third generation and personal multimedia environments builds on GPRS and is known as Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution (EDGE).
It will allow GSM operators to use existing GSM radio bands to offer wireless multimedia IP-based services and applications at theoretical maximum speeds of 384 kbps with a bit-rate of 48 kbps per timeslot and up to 69.2 kbps per timeslot in good radio conditions.
Vendors say that implementing EDGE will be relatively painless and will require relatively small changes to network hardware and software as it uses the same TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frame structure, logic channel and 200 kHz carrier bandwidth as today's GSM networks.
As EDGE progresses to coexistence with 3G WCDMA, data rates of up to ATM-like speeds of 2 Mbps could be available.
Groups from the two camps have been working on ways to converge their 3G plans, with the result that operators using either standard can roll out GPRS packet-based high-speed networks, together with EDGE as a radio interface."
Currently, Cingular and AT&T are implementing EDGE in the US but I'm sure T-Mobile will follow. I just got my hands on a Nokia 3200 to try EDGE but haven't got around to activating everything yet. I'll let you know. Actually, I don't even know if I'll get into an area that supports EDGE. Hopefully, it is around here.

Before I say anything, DON'T ANYONE CALL ME NAMES OR HARRASS ME!!! Yes, I got a Nokia. Several of them in fact. And I have Sanyo's LG's, Samsung's and SONY Ericssons. True, my favorite phone is the T616, but I DO enjoy using my Nokia's every now and then. (I love SIM cards! You can just pop it in another phone, and off you go!) So don't call me names. I just happen to like lots of different phones. (Sides, if someone didn't buy a Nokia every now and then, how would you know they suck?)
Anyways, I got a Nokia 6200 for US AT&T service. Anyways, it is advertised as having the "EDGE" capabilities, so it transfers data faster. Well, I'm sorry to disappoint, but I have NOT noticed a significant decrease in the time it takes to download things. For me, personally, if I'm in a well "reception-ated" area, then I get fast downloads with any phone, but in a bad reception area, I get slow downloads. That's it for me.

Even the latest EDGE phones have limitation of 118kbps,whenever u test it do tell us the results -we'll have EDGE around may -june ,I Guess its very costly?

Do you know if EDGE is available/supported in your area? Maybe it is GPRS you're surfing on!?

Nope, EDGE is indeed supported in my area, and besides, I was visiting my family in a supposed EDGE enhanced area.

That's interesting! EDGE is not supposed to reach 3G speeds but it should at least be a significant difference. At full coverage, you should be able to watch streaming video.
