Not all Java games work on the T610. In fact, I've found that unless the site states specifically that the game will work with T610, it probably won't. T610 does not have very good Java implementation, if you do a forum search, you'll find some posts discussing this issue.
Not sure what you mean about poly's being better than midis? Midi's ARE polyphonic ringtones!
Midi files are just one example of a sound format that can be used to create polyphonic ringtones, and it's the only polyphonic format that the T610 supports. You can't use .wma, .wav, .mp3 or .mmf with the T610, only .mid
Of course, T610 does support other sound formats but these are monophonic, not polyphonic.

Yeah, it's a question of how good the musician is that created the midi!
The tones you get on free sites are often created by amateurs with a minimum of equipment while the tones that you have to pay for are created by professional musicians using very expensive equipment and software, and as such are usually much, much better. It's more down to the tallent of the musician than the equipment, although having top notch kit certainly helps!
Polyphonic basically means that more than one note (or sound) can be played at the same time, monophonic means that only one note can be played at any one time. Mono tones are the 'old' beeper ringtones.

Presumably because if you want very high quality tones, you might have trouble finding them for free? I know that alot of free tones I've sampled were downright appalling!
Personally, I don't like musical ringtones anyway so I'd certainly never buy one
