I've noticed my themes are much larger than the Sony Ericsson themes that came with the phone.

How large are your themes in general?

The average weight of my themes are:

T610/z600 themes: 143,3 kb
T28/T300/T310 themes: 14,75 kb

(Example to calculate your themes' average weight if you didn't know:

weight of theme 1 + weight of theme 2 + weight of theme 3 etc...
divided into how many themes you have created...)

Yeah but they use gif files instead of jpeg, and the screens are much smaller

not sure i think they're 70kb for T610 themes (not sure if this includes a midi or not though) and T68i; 14-20KB

do you use the save for web feature in photoshop? that is said to reduce the size also the type of picture (JPEG, GIF) etc is as well.

I use the normal "save as" function.

I'll sure try with the save for web, thanks for the tips

Thanks alot!! I decreased a theme's size from 144 kb to around to 23 kb, and it's still not destroyed by the JPEG comprimization!

the average weight of my t616 themes is 42k. when using the save for web feature, play around with both .jpeg and .gif formats to get the file size you desire. some my themes are a mix of both.

Mine tend to be around the 40kb mark.

A few tips though, for real pictures in themes etc use jpg's and crank the jpg compression up to around 50, this will signifigantly reduce size without much loss in quality. Some pictures you can use more, some less, its wholly dependant on the picture.

However for images that are more "solid" in nature or comprise of less than 256 colours like logos or text use GIF.

Below is an example.

the first 3 images are all jpgs. at the bottom of each image is file size and compression used. Note how very little quality is lost.

Size 7.5kb - Using compression of 10

Size 5.4kb - Using compression of 20

Size 3.2kb - Using compression of 50

Now here are 3 more jpgs but this time the pic is more solid. Note how quality degrades more.

Size 7.1kb - Using compression of 10

Size 5.4kb - Using compression of 20

Size 3.7kb - Using compression of 50

Now however if we had saved this as a gif we get a top quality image with a small file size, see below.

Size 3.7kb - Using standard GIF lossless compression

Its sometimes useful to use combinations of GIF and JPG to get best quality to size ratio.
